Coconut Water Is Great For Health

Sugar is one of the major reasons Americans are getting fatter and fatter. Each year, the average American drinks 52.4 gallons of soda, which equates to 52 pounds of sugar — and that’s just from soda.

These numbers are actually higher when you factor in infants and people who do not consume soda. For those who are still consuming drinks with artificial sweeteners, it is old news that you will struggle in your weight loss efforts as well.

Many people say they just can’t drink water — they don’t like it. These flavor (chemical) addicted people are depriving their bodies of the majority of what they are made up of. The human body is 70 percent water, not Pepsi or diet iced tea.  I pity the poor kidneys of individuals that drink very little water.

For those who are trying to become a healthier specimen, I may have an option as you transition from a soda swiller to a water lover. Coconut water is a viable option that is readily available to almost everyone. For young children that are bringing those unhealthy juice boxes to school, consider this a much healthier choice.

Coconut water is the liquid that is found inside young coconuts. It is very different than the liquid found in the more mature coconut that is found in the grocery store. Coconut water is not the same as coconut milk. Coconut water is found inside the young coconut and coconut milk is manufactured by crushing the meat of the coconut.

The juice of the young coconut is sweet but the sugar content is actually very low compared to other beverages. Coconut water contains electrolytes essential in the human body. For this reason it is becoming a very popular sports rehydration beverage.  In third world countries, where people can easily die from influenza and Cholera, coconut water has saved millions of lives by providing the body with a perfectly balanced hydration.

Coconut water actually resembles human blood plasma. Like plasma, it contains a mixture of minerals, amino acids, vitamins, hormones and sugars that are essential for proper rehydration.

One of the most amazing stories I have ever heard was actually reported in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine in 2000. A local resident of the South Pacific island of Malatia presented to the local hospital with all the signs of a major stroke.  For 36 days, doctors tried to save his life with conventional methods. He was given a feeding tube but continued to deteriorate. IV hydration became necessary to keep him alive but the hospital supply was depleted. With no other options available, a needle was inserted to the soft eye of a young coconut and directly infused into the man’s arm.  He was sent home, doing well, two days later.

This was not the first time coconut water has been used for successful IV infusions.  The first studies are found in 1942 in Havana, Cuba.  Coconut water is naturally sterile, making it safe for IV infusion.

But back to how coconut water benefits you.  Commercial sports beverages have a very low electrolyte content and are usually lacking in some minerals such as potassium.  Many contain questionable additives, chemical dyes, emulsifiers and preservatives.  Coconut water is completely natural with no harmful chemicals.  It contains sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, calcium, phosphate and sulfate.  It also contains trace minerals such as zinc and selenium.

Thankfully, coconut water is now available in most supermarkets and is even packaged in small serving sizes for children. For those of you with a bit of a sweet tooth, you will like this transition as you begin to incorporate more pure filtered water into your life.
