Say NO to Dairy?

Of all the food allergies in the US, dairy affects the largest number of people with the most acute symptoms. From colicky babies (a breastfeeding mom passes on her sensitivities) to ear infections and tonsillitis, to bloating and chronic sinusitis, dairy allergies affect the lives of millions. Many people, especially children, are needlessly placed on many rounds of antibiotics for symptoms of dairy allergies.

How many people do you know that are "lactose intolerant"? I bet you know more than a few. I also know that the majority of people who suspect they may have a red flag warning of a dairy allergy will continue to avoid their body's warning signals. Some will even take or drink lactaid in order to continue consuming something that their body does not want. Chronic sinus conditions along with bloating, gas, diarrhea, and even constipation become normal and frequent complaints that are tolerated by the individual with a dairy intolerance.

Because we have been brainwashed to believe that dairy is essential for optimal bone health, we continue to suffer. I hope I am not the first to tell you that drinking milk does very little to prevent osteoporosis or even remotely promote health. Cow dairy is extremely hard for humans to digest. One hundred percent of humans are allergic to casein, a milk protein. Casein (the main ingredient in Elmer's glue) causes a histamine reaction in most individuals and causes an increase in mucous production. Mucous clogs the works! No one feels good or benefits from excess production.

No other population on the planet consumes more calcium than American women and yet we have, by far, the highest rate of osteoporosis in the world. A study funded by the US National Dairy Council gave a group of post menopausal women three 8oz glasses of skimmed milk per day for two years. They then compared their bones with those women who did not drink milk. The dairy group consumed 1,400mg of calcium per day and yet lost bone density at twice the rate of the control group (women who did not drink milk).

The Harvard Nurses' Health Study found that women who consumed the most calcium from dairy foods broke more bones than those who rarely drank milk. Milk makes you acidic! The majority of Chinese people eat little to no dairy. Most of their calcium comes from vegetables and seaweed sources. Osteoporosis in China is very uncommon.

We are the only mammals that consume dairy once we are weaned from mother's milk. It is just not natural to consume dairy and it is certainly not healthy. There are, however, better options. Goat milk is easier to digest than cows milk. Raw milk, although difficult to find, is the superior form of dairy and will not cause allergic reactions in most individuals.

Most individuals consume yogurt on a daily basis. Unfortunately, most consumed yogurts barely qualify as food. Artificial sweeteners and flavorings added to many of the popular brands make the majority of the yogurt just another form of junk food. Those eating high quality, "real" yogurt may not find it difficult to digest as lactose is broken down by healthy lactic acid bacteria.

Many individuals suffer from iron deficiency anemia. What few realize is that consuming dairy contributes to iron deficiency because it blocks iron uptake. Iron deficiency anemia is usually benefited by eliminating dairy, and increasing greens in the diet. Wheatgrass, spinach, kale, endive, and beet greens are a few examples of foods that will help raise iron levels faster than any iron pill I know of, and without the side effect of constipation and stomach upset.

For those of you who want options for your cereal or warm beverage, there are healthy options that actually don't taste bad at all. Rice milk, almond milk, and even hemp seed milk are all readily available at your grocery store. These milk alternatives are a great option and a great first step in making healthier choices, just beware of added sugar in some brands. You probably are wondering why I did not mention soy. Many individuals are allergic and it has also become an overly processed food. If you have an "A" blood type, you may be an exception.

Try eliminating ALL dairy for two weeks. Not only are you likely to breathe easier, feel great and move your bowels better - you are also likely to drop a few pounds.
